"Providing patrons & learners with tools to be independent learners"
"Open access to information (all forms)" " A free and open environment: "service to our diverse population needs"
"Librarianship is a service profession" "Intellectual freedom"
"Love of reading" "Professionalism"
"Collaboration" "Confidentiality"
Collaborative enviroment
life lifelong learning | access for all "Creating curiousity for lifelong learning""Free & ethical access to information"
Establishing a positive relationship with patrons"
"Patron centered & lifeling learning"
Activity: Discuss some themes together
Main theme examples: Lifelong Learning | Service/Collaboration| Access/Professionalism

  • Donna introduces project background, etc.
discusses motivation for the workshop/background of project
(i.e. retention) started with Annie (unt) expanded to Gayla, Lilly [& Cindy]
See Rick Perry and higher education news article ($10,000 BA degree?!)
Source: Hobbs, Tawnell D. "Perry: Tie funding to college grad rate" Dallas Morning News
- students are not prepared for academic work
- the largest population group comes from Denton (that's us!)
- See handout: TEKS Research
"were wanting to make sure we're speaking the same language so we don't confuse students"
we can show our value to our constituents, administrators, students = tool for advocacy
  • Barb
You need to explain what you are actually doing
What is so important about our jobs that anyone would want to support us"
All those values we hold dear.
It's important to know what happens in all those levels
How do we continually reinforce eachother.
We hope you continue the journey

The word research is inappropriately used. See "research based strategy"
"reflection happens throughout the process- it's a huge aspect of guided inquiry"
Zone of intervention - being able to identity points in process when studnent needs assistance (and back off when they are doing their work ) -- collaborative relationship, which we talked about in values is important. We are the adult faciliators.
Not an instruction showing resources. More of an engagement with how students are doing - it does take time.
(See Texas Study chart)

Whole Group activity:
Q: What would be the benefit of the inquiry process itself (as opposed to the scavenger hunt)?
- ownership, students feeling engaged, when the assignment matches the resources the library has, looking at things from multiple point of views...more creativity
Are we helping students with transferable skills (Dumping dewey?article)

Q: "What would be the benefit of librarian & teacher collaboration?"
- Justify my experience, the librarian working with the teacher can give the teacher good feedback/help with work, it is energizing, shared responsability.. Fun/excitement! Synergy- librarian, teacher and student (great collaboration)
technology can be a way librarians can help (However, we do have to be on the same playing field -"our group is still on vista while they have Windows 7" - smartboard example from Judy: this should be demo-ed at library first before classrooms

  • Take home issue of School Library Monthly
  • Activity: write on the post it note your inquirity stage keyword, and keywords to describe how you will accomplish this.Barb and Judy demonstrate with Chinese New Year as an example (Open)
  1. Immerse: Virtual Tour, Engage the senses, what do you what
  2. Explore: Opening doors - browse, reflect, and connect | teams| variety of sources
  3. Identify: Need to get with student to focus on something based on info provided, Sorting information into catagories and then coming up with their meaningful (inquiry) question {example from chinese new year to fireworks!)
  4. Gather: Search, and Evaluate for credibility
  5. Create: Forces students to figure what is important, way to creatively communicate and document, & critical thinking
  6. Share: (students) Share some content and insights, students are learners are the teacher.
  7. Evaluation: Reflections, learning goals, the process and content. (what is being evaluated in 6th grade is different from grade 12 - different parameters)

We are process orientated, collegues are product oriented but if you can incorporate "process" into the rubric because that is part of lifelong learning.

1:00-2:00pm
  • Work in table groups on the 7 Nudging Into Inquiry Articles from School Library Monthly
Each group presents point/application
nudging_articles
- It would be interesting to explore the university setting not just the school (even to explore the set up)
You have connections now in this group (click on Collaborators tab to find your contact)
Gayla (UNT) said she would be fine with having a participants view her freshman instruction session
Cindy (UNT) said she works mostly with online students and invited participants to observe.
Participants agree that seeing other libraries (type or branch) is very helpful for ideas.
Wylaina reminded participants about courtesy cards at Denton Public Library - contact her if you have questions

Judy: We were hoping that we could meet back in the Spring. Based on values, maybe a vision statement.
In August we hope that one of the named researchers can come presents.
If we can captialize on this research plan.
We are presenting at TLA 2012 (please come) and participate on the wiki.
If you want to have lunch/coffee and we will publicize it. We want this to be a conversation we share.
You have to talk to people to get into the classes and become collaborators.
What you do is more powerful, says Judy. You can let principals know how you can assist with their mission.
You are the representative of the profession. Every life you touch can be a life-long collaborators.

Donna: All the research models can follow the terminology. We need to be on the same page with our secondary teachers. We can use any module. They are expecting us to make accomodations for this.
Our administrators are excited about a k-20 plan. We have a lot of support and a lot of excitement for the possibility of this.

Barb: This is a first step. Nobody said this was easy. Why are librarians? Because we care about students.

Hope these notes are helpful!
